Dongguan is located in the mid-south of Guangdong Province east of the Pearl River Delta, with Guangzhou bordering it to the north and Shenzhen to the south. Formerly a county, Dongguan became a city in September 1985 and was then upgraded to prefecture city status in January 1988. Today, Dongguan administers 32 towns, 546 villagers’ committees and 132 neighbourhood committees. Occupying an area of 2,465 square kilometres, the city has a population of over 7 million and is also home to more than 700,000 compatriots from Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan.

The total area of Dongguan by percentage, 27% is water, 25% forest land, and 13% plow land, while 35% of its land area has been fully developed.
