Dongguan is located in the mid-south of Guangdong Province east of the Pearl River Delta, with Guangzhou bordering it to the north and Shenzhen to the south. Formerly a county, Dongguan became a city in September 1985 and was then upgraded to prefecture city status in January 1988. Today, Dongguan administers 32 towns, 546 villagers’ committees and 132 neighbourhood committees. Occupying an area of 2,465 square kilometres, the city has a population of over 7 million and is also home to more than 700,000 compatriots from Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan.

Dongguan is a must pass-by locality from Guangzhou to Hong Kong by road or waterway. The total area of Dongguan by percentage, 27% is water, 25% forest land, and 13% plow land, while 35% of its land area has been fully developed. The climate of Dongguan is subtropical, the average temperature is 22.8°C throughout the year and average rainfall is 1,756.8 millimeters. Dongguan is also the agricultural city with rich aquatic resources which make it the perfect field for of rice, and Lingnan fruits like bananas, lychee, longan, pineapple, orange, tangerine, and orange fruit.

Dongguan holds grand Dragon Boat Festival annually, also the lion dance show, unicorn art, lychee festival, Mid-Autumn Lantern Festival, Chung Yeung Festival, Flower Market and other activities.

Currently, there are more than 80 villages and town culture centers, 390 libraries and 447 culture squares throughout the city. This facility network has been primarily established with a central culture and cultural squares as the primary focus. In the past few years, a number of cultural facilities requiring great investment including the Yulan Theater, Dongguan Library, Dongguan Exhibition Center, Dongguan Science and Technology Museum, as well as other leading facilities of similar themes for advanced ideologies and modern designs have become the cultural landmark of Dongguan.
